DWG or DXF?

DWG and DXF files are used in all areas of the engineering field. You have probably heard of these formats before but how much do you really know about them? They appear to be very similar and achieve the same results, right? This blog will explain what each file type is and how to use them correctly.

What is a DWG?

DWG is a file format created by the company Autodesk. DWG’s have the ability to store both 2D and 3D file formats. DWG files are made up of a binary code allowing the files to be much more compact than text files. Not all programs have the ability to read DWG files as they are proprietary to Autodesk. This may cause some headaches if you or a customer do not have the correct applications to open or view DWG files.

What IS a DXF?

DXF is a file format also created by Autodesk. DXF files only have the ability to store 2D file formats. DXF files use a text or ASCII format to store data. These text formats are not as compact as the DWG’s binary code formats, with the average file size being about 25% larger. DXF files are an open-source file format which allows them to be opened by almost every CAD software and viewer program available.

When Should a DWG File Be Used?

DWG file formats should only be used when operating Autodesk software or other CAD programs that accept the DWG format. If you are transferring files, it is important to know what type of CAD or viewer program the recipient uses to ensure they can view the file. Also, if you are trying to capture 3D data only the DWG file format will be able to do so.

When Should a DXF File Be Used?

DXF files should be used when transferring to any other CAD programs. Since DXF is an open source format, most CAD programs and viewers will be able to open the file ensuring your customer can successfully view your file.

When Software can open or edit dwg’s and dxf’s?

Of the CAD programs listed, AutoCAD and DraftSight are the only ones that can edit DWG’s and DXF’s. The rest of the programs can only open and view them or must import them into a usable file type. For example, a DWG or DXF is imported into SolidWorks as a sketch.

Conclusion

As it turns out there are some pretty distinct differences between the DWG file format and the DXF file format. DWG files are specific to only Autodesk software and a few other CAD programs while DXF files can be used by almost every CAD program. The most important thing to consider is the CAD system you or your customer is using. Nothing is more frustrating than getting a file you cannot view or have access to. Now, with this information you can select the best file format for your application.
